Tiruchirapalli

[ Edit ] Overview

Tiruchirapalli, also known as Tiruchi or Trichy, is the fourth largest town in Tamil Nadu. It is mostly an industrial / commercial town.  However, there are a few interesting and important temples in Tiruchirapalli, and its close access Thanjavur and the Great Chola Temples, that make it a worthwhile destination.

Included among them are the Rock Fort Temple complex - Tiruchirapalli's defining landmark built on a rocky outcrop and visible from miles away - and the Sri Ranganathaswami Temple in the town of Srirangam.  Apart from the temples, there are several Churches, Colleges, and Missions dating back to the 1700's in Tiruchi.

Tiruchi is located on the banks of the Cauvery River.

[ Edit ] History

Trichi has a long history that spans over 2500 years and covering various dynasties starting with the Cholas from 300 BC.  Other rulers included the Pallavas and Pandyas (between 590 - 880 AD) and others including Hoysulas and Vijaynagara.

However, it was under the Nayaks, who changed their capital back and forth from Madurai to Tiruchirapalli, that the town flourished and got its now defining landmark - the Rock Fort.

There are several theories on the origin of the city's name. One of the most popular is that is was named after a three-headed demon Trishira who prayed at the local Shiva temple and obtained Lord Shiva's support and favours in return.
