Somnath

[ Edit ] Overview

Somnath located in the Prabhas Kshetra near Veraval in Saurashtra, is on the western coast of Gujarat. The town is famous for the Somnath Temple - one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the symbol of Lord Shiva. The term “Somnath’ means protector of the Moon God.

Legend has it that Soma, the Son-i-law of Daksha, once disobeyed his father in law. As a curse, Daksha said “Thou shalt wane” and it is from thus that the Moon is said to have started to shrink. However, before the moon disappeared totally, all the Gods requested Daksha to revoke his curse. Therefore Daksha asked Soma to take a dip in the mouth of the Saraswathi River and then pray to Lord Shiva. Hence, at Prabhasa, Lord Shiva came to be known as Somnath, the Lord of the Moon.
