Nasik, located about 180 km from Mumbai, gained prominence due to its mythological, historical, social and cultural reasons. Nasik today is a hub for industrial, political, social and cultural events. In the recent years Nasik has also gained popularity for its growing wine industry. The asset of the city is the river Godavari and the temples around the river which entice tourists from across the country.
According to history, the name Nasik is derived from the Hindu epic Ramayana. Sita was abducted by Ravana from Panchavati in the Western Ghats, according to Ramayana.
