Yamunotri, along with Gangotri, Badrinath, and Kedarnath, is part of the 'Char Dham", or one of the four holy places a devout Hindu visits during his lifetime. Yamunotri is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, and is located atop the Bandhar Poonch Peak at an altitude of 3,165 m above sea level. 

Yamunotri is the source of the river Yamuna which originates from the Champasar Glacier 1 Km ahead of the shrine. The route to this glacier is very arduous and so pilgrims generally offer their prayers at the temple itself.

The temple of Yamunotri was built by Maharani Gularia of Jaipur in the 19th century. Yamunotri is said to have been the home of the ancient sage Asit Muni
