Vrindavan

[ Edit ] Overview

Vrindavan or Brindavan in the state of Uttar Pradesh is a famous piligrim city and is known for its association with Lord Krishna. Located on the banks of the river Yamuna, 15 km from the other pilgrim city of Mathura, Vrindavan is famous for its fragrant grooves and several Krishna temples. The city formerly called Brindaban is home to over 5000 Hindu temples.

Vrindavan derived its name from the Vrinda grooves in the area. Legend has it that Vindavan was covered in the Vrinda or tulsi(basil) grooves at one day. Yet another legend suggests that Vrindavan got its name from Vrinda devi, one of Lord Krishna’s friends. Vrindavan is where Lord Krishna is said to have played with the gopis and wooed his beloved Radha. According to learned scholars it is the most holy city of India and a sacred place for many religious traditions like Gaudya, Vaishnavism and Hinduism.

This was inside the Banke Bihari Temple. It was one of the most fun filled atmosphere I have been in.
The priests changed the clothing on the presiding deities every few minutes.
...and every time that they raised the curtain following the costume change...the crowd went nuts.
