Mount Abu
[ Edit ] Overview
Mount Abu is the only hill station in the state of Rajashtan. It lies in the southern part of Aravali ranges at an altitude of 1220 m above the sea level. Mount Abu stands on an independent hillock separated from the main Aravali Range by a deep gorge.
The place gets its name from Arbuada, who was the son of Lord Himalaya. Formerly it was called Mount Arbud.
Till the 11th century Mount Abu was a Vaishnav and Shiva pilgrim centre. But it is believed according to records of Jain scriptures that Lord Mahavira, the 24th Jain Tirthankar visited this place and blessed it. It has now therefore become a major Rajput and Jain Pilgrim centre.
Mount Abu still has many tribal communities living in the thickets of the forest. They still manage to follow their traditional lifestyles even today.

[ Edit ] History
Mount Abu was a part of the Chauhan kingdom of Rajputs and the summer getaway of the Rajput Kings. It was leased to the British government by the Maharaja of Sirohi to be used as headquarters of the resident of Rajputana. The British came to Mount Abu in the summers to escape the dust and heat of the desert plains of Rajasthan. Mount Abu also served as a sanatorium for the troops. There are still many British style bungalows and lodges called ‘thikana’ here.
