Manali
[ Edit ] Overview
Picturesque Manali, located at the top end of Kullu Valley and on the west bank of the Beas River, is one of the prime hill station destinations in India with its dense forests, mountains, and numerous trekking routes.
Once a sleepy little village, Manali has been commercialised rapidly in the last few years with a profusion of hotels and hostels catering to tourists, hippies, and backpackers - and the population has exploded toa around 30,000. Nevertheless, the beautiful location, access to Rohtang Pass and the charming original village, make this a very attractive hill station. The town’s terrain is varied enough for a challenging trek or two and the surrounding mountains offer some of the best skiiing in India.
Tourism is the main driver of the economy of Manali - which grew in popularity only after the rise of militancy in Kashmir in the late 1980s.
[ Edit ] History
Manali was once just a small village lying on the ancient trade route to the Kingdom of Ladakh.
The British introduced apples and trout fish to the region - both of which were not native to Manali. Apples, and other fruit including plums and pears are one of the key sources of income for the residents of the villages surrounding Manali.
In mythological terms, Manali and the surrounding mountains are beleived to be the abode of the Saptarshi or "Seven Sages".
