Jammu

Known as the ‘city of temples’, Jammu is one of the most famous pilgrimage destinations in India and is scattered with temples and shrines with glittering shikhars. Jammu city is located on the banks of river Tawi and is the winter capital of state of Jammu & Kashmir. Founded by Raja jamboolochan in the 14th century,  Jammu is dominated by the SDhivalik hill ranges. Jammu is also of an administrative division comprising of 10 districts namely Doda, Jammu, Kathua, Kishtwar,  Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi, Ramban, Samba and Udhampur. Jammu is the largest city in the region also the main economic center of the state. In the west of the City, Jammu is seperated form Pakistan by the Line of Control.

Sitauted in the north and bordered by Kashmir and Ladakh regions, some of the most beautiful places to visit, Jammu has many tourist attractions on offer. Bahu Fort and Gardens are sitauted on a rock and was constructed originally by Raja Jamboolochan. It is one of the oldest forts of Jammu with a Kali Temple inside. Bagh e Bahu is an aquarium - an entertainment cum educational tourist attraction. It is  the largest in South East Asia situated in Jammu and has 24 aquarium caves and 400 varieities of freshwater and marine fish on display. Amar Mahal building situated on a hilltop imitates a French building as it was planned by a French architect. It was the residence of the Royal Family, Maharani Tara Devi. Gauri Kund is fabled spring with mythological connections. Krimchi is the site of three of the oldest temples which have distinct Greek architectural flavour to it.

Apart from the city attractions, there are many places to visit around Jammu as well. Sudh Mahadev, Vaishno Devi, Amarnath and Purumnadal are some of the popular pilgrim sites around Jammu.  Patnitop is a popular hill resort close to Jammu, with a panaromic view of he Chenab river and Panjal mouintain range. In winter due to snow fall, Panitop becomes a popular ski area. Mansar lake about 62 kms form Jammu, is covered with forested hills and has a shrine on its eastern bank dedicated to Sheshnag, a mythological snake with six heads. Nandini Wildlife Sanctuary, close to Jammu is famous for different species of pheasants.

Jammu was founded by Raja Jamboolochan in the 14th century. It was named Jambu-Nagar which was subsequently camed to be called Jammu. Jambu Lochan's brother, Raja Bahu Lochan, constructed a fort on the bank of the Tawi River - The Bahu Fort -  that is now one of the popular historical places in Jammu.

Jammu has been frequently mentioned in mythological books like Mahabharata, there is even evidence that suggests Jammu was part of the Harappan civilization. Jammu was also part of the Maurya, Kushan, Kushanshahs and Gupta kingdoms. Before becoming part of the British India, Jammu was ruled by Mughals, Sikhs, and Hindu Kings. It became part of Indian republic after independence.
